Charactristics
- They are crustaceans, more closely related to shrimp and crayfish than to insects
- Dooryard sowbugs possess 2 tail like appendages at the tip of the abdomen, which prevents them from rolling into a ball
- The common pillbug can, however, roll into a tight ball
Habitat
- Pillbugs or sowbugs invade damp basements and crawl spaces, they also may infest potted plants
- A heavy infestation indoors indicates a large population immediately outside the building
Diet
- Pillbugs and sowbugs both feed on decaying vegetable matter and are found under mulch or vegetable debris of all kinds, beneath objects on damp ground
- Their feeding habits and behavior are similar to millipedes
